Lancaster NE121 30th July 1944 Mission to Cahagnes

T/O 05.45 from Coningsby to attack enemy strong-points in the Normandy Battle Zone. Set on fire in the port inner engine, the blaze soon spreading to engulf the entire wing. The order to bale out was given and at 0800 the Lancaster crashed SE of St Lo in the Department of Manche.

Of those killed three have no known graves, while the others are buried in the Bayeux War cemetery. Those holding the DFM had their Awards promulgated 12Jan43, 7Dec43, 15Feb44 and 16Nov43 for service with No.142 Sqdn, No.619 Sqdn, No.51 Sqdn and No.158 Sqdns respectively.

F/L Baker, a veteran of 51 sorties, was the son of the Revd. E.A.C.B.Baker of Kellitts in Jamaica.

From the Squadron ORB:

Three American Mk. 36 mines were dropped between positions 011342N 1033330(?)E and 011330N 1033620(?)E. On return journey when in position 0710(?) 830?E all engines failed and captain glided aircraft from ???? feet to sea level, levelled out and ditched. The crew got out with the exception of J29???F/O D. J. A. Robertson (Nav) who was not again seen. The Captain Can C12?? S/Ldr D. G. M. Joy suffered from sever head injuries in the ditching and died in the water. Aus. 414878(?) W/O P. D? Arscott (Wop/AG) was drowned. The remainder of the crew were in the water approx. 8 hrs until being picked up by HSL after sighting A/C.

HENRIQUEZ, ALFRED GEORGE:
Lancaster LL972 - crashed near Risznow SW of Medewitz, Kreis [= District] Gammin, Pommern, Germany. Crew first buried Risznow. (Chorley Vol. 5, page 387). I've all names, please let me know in case..........................).

Wellington X - LN705 aborted raid on Padua and 4,000 lb bomb blew up on bellylanding, Tortorella, Italy. (This loss not yet in my files and have to do more research on other crew involved in this accident).

Mosquito FB.VI - PZ293 - escort bombers airfield Florennes, Belgium. Pilot blinded by search lights, crashed 4 km SSW of Chaumont, Namur, 23 km WSW of Dinant, Belgium. Also killed F/Sgt E.J.A. Broomfield - 1451239 (both first buried at Florennes).

LLOYD, IOAN ARNOLD:
Typhoon MN973 - close support operation Market Garden - crashed in the area of Kevelaer, Germany.

MELHADO, LESLIE STANHOPE:
Lancaster R5516 - Flak and night fighter - crashed into North Sea W off Egmond aan Zee (Netherlands). Melhado's body was washed ashore 28/06/1942 near Schoorl and initially buried 15/07/1942 as an unknown airman; identified post war. (Chorley Vol. 3 , page 118).

PEARSON, ARTHUR OWEN:
Lancaster PB864 of 1660 HCU on training mission. Problems with automatic pilot, broke up in air, crashed near St.Pierre Eglise, Manche, France. (Chorley Vol. 8 page 171 - 7 dead, 1 injured - I've their names, just in case............)

POUYAT, TAUNTON OSWALD CONSTANTINE:
Anson Can. serial 6930 on training flight (formation flying) collided with Anson Can serial 7412 both of 16 SFTS, Hagersville, Ontario, Canada. Crashed near Waterford, Ontario, also killing LAC (Pilot u/t) F.V. Stephens - RCAF R/191955.

REID, ARTHUR GEORGE:
Stirling IV - LK276 of 190 Sqn. Towing Horsa Glider PF753 (testing new crew). Shot down by a German intruder and crashed along the Old Roman Road near Great Dunmow. (Not listed by Chorley because not Bomber Command). Crew also killed: F/O J.I. Kidgell, RAAF 410499 - F/O W.W.D'A. Brain, RNZAF 423365 - Sgt H. Holt, 2209061 - F/O N. Woods, 176742 - F/Sgt R.D. Payne, 1391069 and F/Sgt R.M. Dauncey, 1431216. (Air Britain: Hit trees and cables in circuit near Great Dunmow and crashed, Newton Fields, Essex).
