DefaultRSL asks for further memorial tree protection

It never ceases to amaze me why there is this persistence with over head power. Yes, it is needed on occasion but the majority of it, particularly in residential areas, can be put underground. We've got the technology to do so but governments who are unwilling to bit the bullet and spend the money...our money.

Perth, where I used to live, is built on a large sand plain. New developments have underground power. Imagine how easy it is to dig through the sand!

RSL wants underground power to protect memorial figs - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

The RSL has renewed calls for underground powerlines in the Pleystowe area, to preserve memorial figs along Mackay-Eungella Road.

The trees were planted in 1948 to remember nine local soldiers who were killed in World War II - one tree had to be cut down earlier this month after it was hit by a wide load.

District president Peter Jarrodd says it is very upsetting that trees along one side of the road have the mid-section cut out of them so they do not interfere with overhead powerlines.

"It's an absolute disgrace the way that people who are responsible look after the trees," he said.

"These are memorial trees. They say it costs too much to put underground power in - I think the people who's names are on those trees paid a hell of a higher cost than they're going to pay."

Meanwhile, the regional manager of Main Roads, Ian Husband, says they are committed to replacing the tree, but he is unsure how long it will take.

"It would depend on us laying our hands on a suitable tree and that won't take all that long I don't think, but we'll talk to council's parks and gardens people about that," he said.

We will replace the tree? That's like saying that they need to knock down the war memorial....but they will build another one. Like no one would notice or care!!
