    DefaultHandy Hints for Posting

I have noted that some members have problems with using some of the features offered by the forum, the most common being posting pictures, either as attachments or embedded into the main message.

Over the next few posts I shall attempt to explain the most common features that will make life a little easier.

Step one: When replying to a post it is always best to click the Go Advanced button at the bottom of the message box. This gives you more features, and is less likely to cause issues which are evident when using the Quick Reply button.

The Go Advanced button will then bring up the following page. I have highlighted the most common buttons that posters will use.

    DefaultPosting a link

There are two ways of posting a link:

    1) Cutting and pasting the whole link in the message

    2) Inserting a link embedded into a particular word, e.g. BBC. To achieve the latter then one uses the button shown in the diagram

    1) Highlight the word in which you wish to embed the link
    2) Click on the button indicated, which will bring up the pop.
    3) Insert the URL of the link
    4) Click OK

In the main body of the post you will see something like this:

To check that the link has been embedded correctly click the Preview Post below the message box. Then click on the underlined word to make sure that the page opens.

    DefaultAttachments

To attach something, scroll down the page after you have clicked Go Advanced:

When you click the button indicated the following pop-up window will appear.

Then you should find (browse) the file that you wish to attach. The file address will appear in the top box.

Then click Upload. Depending upon the size of the file, this may take some time.

When the file has been attached successfully, the file name will appear just below the second box.

To attach a picture or another file, there are a few rules:

    1) make sure the picture/doc is not too big. The permitted sizes for the types of files allowed are shown pop up box when you click manage attachments. If you get an error message the most common fault is the file is too big. You should also try to limit the height/width of a picture so that it doesn't swamp the page.

    2) Only 5 attachments allowed per message. If you want to attach more, then please start another message in the thread.

    3) Certain files are not permitted, of which the most common that people have issues with are PowerPoint slides. There are certain hosting sites that allow you to upload slide shows, and you can then post the link here.

    DefaultEmbedding a picture

One of the most common questions asked by members is how one embeds a picture into a message, rather than attaching it.

    1) Firstly one needs to join a photo-hosting site. There are a number around, and most are free. One of the most popular is Photobucket

    2) You need to upload the picture you want to share onto the hosting site.

    3) Once it has loaded, you need to view the image. This is usually done by right-clicking (with the mouse) on the image and clicking view image or picture. The picture should appear in its own with a URL in the address bar.

    4) Copy that URL and then click the button shown in the diagram below. When the pop-up appears, paste the URL and click OK. In your message that you are writing you will only see the link inside [img] [/img] .

    5) To make sure that the picture is as you want it, click Preview at the bottom of the message box

    Photobucket Hints

Once you have loaded your image on to Photobucket you will get something like this:

    Click on the Share button

That will bring up the following:

Now right-click on the image, and the picture will appear on its own. THAT is the URL you need to post in the pop-up in WW2Chat.

Important: When you open your Photobucket account, go to Account Options (in the top right corner of the Photobucket page). Then scroll down to Album Settings. Change My album is to Private. That way people can only view individual pictures that you wish to share rather than your entire album.

DefaultEmbedding a picture from another site

The procedure is basically the same as above:

    1) Right click in the picture and click on View image/picture
    2) Copy and paste the URL into the pop-up as in the last post
    3) Always post source of said picture

NOTE: the internet is fickle and websites come and go. If you embed a picture that originated from another site, and that site should shutdown, then that picture will disappear too. This is espcially true of regional newspapers who remove news stories and pictures from their servers very quickly.

    DefaultSources and quotes

Though we are not a commercial forum nor are we making any profits, we do follow commerical rules on things like copyright, appropriate attribution and correct sourcing of information.

    So:

    1) Always post a link from where the information came from, or details of the book/article etc if you are quoting from it or posting scanned pages/pictures

    2) When posting text, use the quote facility.

This shows that the information has been gathered from an external source (attributed, of course, with the originators URL or book etc details). Text placed within the feature will look like this:

    this is a test

Thanks Teach! Reminded me of a few buttons that'd shortcut the way I do things at times.

    Hi John,

There's no need to memorise everything I've written. I have stickied the thread so that it will appear at the top of the other threads in that forum. If you ever have any problems, and the above posts do not help, then get in touch with me or one of the other Mods
