They would have to test relations of the 645 sailors to confirm this wouldn't they?
Australia HMAS Sydney sailor to be reburied at Geraldton - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
The Defence Department says the remains of a sailor, believed to be from HMAS Sydney, will be reburied at Geraldton in Western Australia next month.
The remains were exhumed from Christmas Island two years ago but the Navy has not been able to formally identify the man.
It is believed he was one of the 645 crew of the Sydney which sunk in 1941 after a battle with a German raider.
The wreck of the Sydney was located off the Geraldton coast in March after years of research.
The Navy says it will be keeping a DNA sample from the remains in the hope they can be identified in the future.
The service is planned for November 19.

Australia I think so, Geoff.
Australia Has any one heard about an sailor on an Aussie battleship, that was being attacked by the Japs during ww2 with an sailor strapping himself to the ship, while the ship was floundering while he was firing at the jap planes. Was it the HMAS Sydney?
He's actually a long distance family member of mine. Does anybody heard about that story? Can you help? Cheers
United Kingdom Hi firefoxy, welcome to Chat.
That story does ring a bell, and I believe we mentioned it in another thread. I just can't remember the name, for now. I'm sure Andy or Spidge will know
Australia Hi Firefoxy, welcome aboard. The young man you're thinking of is Teddy Sheean. He wasn't on the Sydney as she was sunk before the Japanese entered the war. He was on HMAS Armidale, a corvette. The link below will give you a good overview of your relative and, I hope you agree, if ever there was a case for being awarded a Victoria Cross...
How did you find out about your relation to him?
