Bouncing Bombs

Not sure if this has been posted on here but I just love this footage. Makes you wonder how many casualties, to men and planes were suffered before they got it right? Kitty will like the Mozzies!!!!!http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=5JqBiMgC2Wg

I love bouncing bomb footage. I always think what a mad idea it was and yet it worked. That compilier has done a great job with the music overdub.

Cheers for posting that 51H. I might just watch it again now

I still wince at the one who is too low and gets his tail knocked off and disintegrates.

What ship was the "target" for the Mossie towards the end?

The Germans had a similar idea using modified FW190s

I think the idea was to use the smaller bouncer against the Tirpitz? with the Mozzies, but was never put into action.

OK, the ickle bomb is Highball. It was in production and testing BEFORE Upkeep but minor problems prevented its use on its initial intended target which was the Tirpitz. The development of Highball, and the Admiralties clout almost prevented the Dams going ahead.
The ship on which Highball is being tested is an old RN ship in Scotland. May be Scapa Flow but I seem to think something Loch comes to mind.
51, as to casualties, no loss of life was received at 617 before the Dams raid. As to 618 Squadron (Highball) obviously they did lose men as the crash in the footage showed. I am looking forward to getting a squadron history of 618 soon.
Highball was never used in anger. Its trials were stopped in 43.

Love your avatar, Kitty.

The crash was an A-26 so possibly not 618? I think I know someone with a 618 Sqn history. You'll have to ask him nicely.

Still intrigued by that ship. Looks a little odd so I reckon you're right with her being old but the camouflage pattern is interesting.

I think Highball was tested on old ships as they then wanted to test how the explosives worked, the dynamics of the bomb in the bounce, impact and underwater etc etc etc.

If you do want to know more then get Barnes Wallis's Bombs. Absolutely bloody brilliant.

Oh and if I remember the avi will change every day up to Sunday.
