Oooh, Mk I Spit with metal three-bladed prop. Cool!
The B-17 appears to have its rudder hard over but this could have been caused by the force of the collision not an indication of evasive action. However, I can't see the Lanc's port undercarriage perhaps indicating the B-17 has sliced through it or the starboard leg of the Fort is hiding it.
Chin turret on the Fort appears crunched as well but I can't work out how she could have ended up on her nose with the Lanc on her.
I think the tail/rudder of the B17 is the clue - it actually looks like it's back is broken, so creating a V - hence it's nose up. See the way the belly turret is so close to the ground - almost touching it?
Good point. I also think the weight of the Lanc is on the B-17 going by the compressed starboard leg of the Fort and the Lanc's one barely touching the ground. That gives the impression of the Lanc riding up on the Fort though.
Hmm, doors on B-17 are open...hmm, no hydraulics, doors flop open, brakes non-existent. Would tie in with apparent battle-damaged No 2. You wouldn't go to the trouble of feathering a prop in a collision. You'd potentially cut fuel/switches and get the hell out?
