I reckon the B17 had already made an emergency landing earlier - and the Lanc ran into it later (possible same day/night or the B17 wouldhave been cleared) - possible brake failure?

Yep, I was just coming to that conclusion. The Lanc has ridden up on the B-17. If the Fort had sliced underneath the Lanc, the forward fuse of the Lanc would be much more heavily damaged from the prop on No 4.

I was reading about a U.S. Aviator in the Pacific who during WW2 crashed his aircraft on landing. The aircraft's momentum carried it on through the flight line where it proceeded to wipe out some 70 aircraft either from collison or fire.

For the life of me I cannot find where I read this, perhaps Kyt can, he's good at that kind of stuff.

No pressure then

I don't recall it off the top of my head, David, but I'll have a look around in a bit.

I agree, not seen that before. I'm wondering if one of the people standing around in the picture could be my Dad! Can you tell if any of them have a fag going? Apparently they used to smoke in the aircraft all the time!

Sorry David, have just tried enlarging it to have a look see but I just can't tell. And slapped wrists for smoking in the plane - was completely frowned upon.

I dont know about that! But look at the scene in Tora! Tora! Tora! with the kittyhawk running amok! It was a accident and the men you see running away were scared for their lives!

This is a real head scratcher. I haven't been able to pinpoint anything yet. Might have to go the hard slog way, and check some serials.
