Airmen remembered on Malta

timesofmalta.com - WWII airmen remembered

Quote:
More than 2,300 airmen who died at sea during World War II were remembered yesterday during a short ceremony by the Air Force Memorial, in Floriana.

The golden eagle at the top of the memorial gleamed in the afternoon sun as dignitaries and members of the Royal British Legion's Kimbolton Branch paid their respects to the fallen airmen from various countries for whom there is no known grave.

None of the members whose names are written on the memorial were Maltese.

"Let us remember those who have died for their country at war," Canon Tom Mendel, the chancellor of the Anglican Cathedral, said.

President Eddie Fenech Adami was among those who laid a wreath at the foot of the memorial, which was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth in 1954.

I was speaking to an Australian who lives on Malta who was there on Anzac Day. He is going to take some photos for me at Capucchini cemetery this weekend.

My Avatar is the memorial to the 22 Commonwealth Coastwatchers at the Temakin Cemetery on Betio (Tarawa Atoll) who were beheaded by the Japanese on 15th October 1942. http://www.dva.gov.au/media/publicat...mem_beito.html

"You were given the choice between war and dishonor.
You chose dishonor and you will have war."

(Winston Churchill made this prophetic pronouncement in a House of Commons speech in 1938, just after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler. Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)

What did the Australians do in ww2 and other conflicts? Check out this site:

An impressive memorial I have not seen before (not saying much). Must get to Malta one day. Was saying to Jodi this morning, as we went passed a map of the world and I circled the Aegean with my finger, that a trip to the Med would be cool. Not sure if it's my reading material, memories of our wedding and honeymoon or the pics of the Greek Islands in the cafe this morning that inspired me!
