Who am I?

I was a lieutenant in September 1914, was under the eye of Sir John Monash and ended ww1 as a Lt. Colonel who was decorated and mentioned in despatches five times. The battalion that I formed in Australia fought with distinction.

If Germany had invaded the UK in 1940, another Battalion that I formed and trained would have met that German threat on the beaches.

I would not have to wait long to prove my ability against the German war machine.

"You were given the choice between war and dishonor.
You chose dishonor and you will have war."

(Winston Churchill made this prophetic pronouncement in a House of Commons speech in 1938, just after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler. Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)

One of the more underrated Australians.

A really good read here about a General who would not be pushed around by his superiors if he thought they were wrong. Maybe this is why he was not given the accolades he should have received.

Due to the fact that this thread occasionally languishes in the doldrums for a few days while we are waiting for question setters to come back to it, i did wonder if you would all like a 72 hour period for answers to be given and either verified correct or wrong. Once the 72 hours are up, if the original setter has not been able to return to verify the answer a Mod would do so and the quiz could continue.

And one little thing. Maybe if everyone highlighted their question in a bright colour so it can be easily located in a thread.

What do you all think?
So from now on can we have a 3 day limit on awaiting a response from the questioner, and all questions to be in red

Question: This pilot was a POW and was awarded the Military Cross for his time as a POW escapee. He spent 4 years in a camp, and when did he manage to escape he did so with someone with a very famous surname. Who was he?

Sorry for the delay - forgot to check the thread.

Afraid not David

I shall leave it another 24 hours or so before giving the answer and letting someone else a go
