Bill beats infection

So good to hear that he is on the mend.

Bill beats infection to celebrate 108th birthday

Quote:
A FIRST World War veteran from Devon has astounded doctors by fighting off serious illness just days before celebrating his 108th birthday.

Bill Stone, one of the last four remaining veterans of the First World War, was admitted to Royal Berkshire Hospital on September 6 after collapsing at his Wokingham residential home.

Mr Stone, originally from Ledstone, near Kingsbridge in South Devon, has now fought off a virulent infection and returned to the care home in time to host his birthday celebrations.

Mr Stone is one of 14 children born to William and Emma Stone.

He joined the Royal Navy in Plymouth on his 18th birthday as a stoker after a previous attempt to sign up when he was 15 failed. His father had refused to sign his papers after already seeing three sons go off to war.

Mr Stone joined the battlecruiser HMS Tiger, which took him to Scapa Flow, the home of the Navy's Grand Fleet.

He also saw action during the Second World War and was decorated with 12 medals during his time with the Royal Navy, including being presented with the Dunkirk Medal.

Speaking to the Western Morning News previously, Mr Stone, whose wife Lily died in 1995, said: "I always say: 'God help us'. I have said it many times and it has always helped tremendously. I've been very lucky. I've had a wonderful life. I've always worked hard, never stopped for a minute and it's kept me going all right."
