Remains of Digger unearthed

Remains of Aussie soldier unearthed | NEWS.com.au

Quote:
THE remains of an Australian World War I soldier have been unearthed at a battle site in Belgium, Australia's embassy in Brussels said today.

The remains, found at the site of the Battle of Messines, were identified as those of an Australian serviceman as fragments of his military insignia and uniform were also unearthed, said embassy spokeswoman Isabelle Draux.

There was a good chance the soldier would eventually be named, she said.

"The Australian Government is firm in our commitment to honour our war dead, and is already undertaking historical research to establish any identification links," Defence Minister Warren Snowden said.

Around 6000 Australian troops were involved in some of the Great War's bloodiest fighting on the western front.

In September 2006 the remains of five bodies were discovered by local workers in the nearby Ypres area, site of the 1917 Battle of Passchendaele.

They were identified by DNA sampling after a publicity campaign in Australia resulted in their descendants coming forward.

The remains of the latest soldier to be found would be re-interred at one of the Commonwealth war graves in Belgium, probably next month, the spokeswoman said.
