Not quite WW2, but a memorial has been dedicated to the 140 Shackleton crewmen lost while preserving our freedom in the Cold War.

Excellent to hear that the men and women who stayed vigilant will be remembered.

Unfortunately, with the grounding of the Shack in the US, the only one left flying is in South Africa.

60th anniversary of the RR Griffon? Um...

At Alness, we used to do exercises with Shackletons, on the last one, a SAREX, the aircraft dropped the lindeholme gear right on top of the "survivor" a SARBE in a tupperware box in a singeseater dinghy. Had there been a injured man, then they would have been killed as the centre cannister landed right on top of the dingy!

But is nice to know that the men who lost their lives in the cause of freedom, will be remembered in the memorial.

Synchronicity at work. I got a text about this whilst at the National Memorial Arboretum today. One newly unveiled memorial for you.

ayethankyou

Not sure why they say this, unless they assume the Griffon was only fitted to the Shack.

The Spitfire Mk XII first flew with the Griffon in 1943, and I believe the first flight of the Griffon would have been the previous year, fitted to the Spitfire Mk III (a one-off used as an engine testbed).

So its amazing this engine was still in service in 1991.
