Richard (Dick) Moseley RIP

A STALWART of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society has died, aged 82.

Richard (Dick) Moseley, honorary treasurer since 1968, was only the sixth person to hold the office since the society’s formation in 1904.

Over the past four decades he witnessed the fluctuating financial fortunes of the Royal Welsh Show from its loss-making period of the late 1960s and early 1970s to its later successful years, record attendances and centenary in 2004.

A spokesman said: “Throughout, his constant financial advice to the board of management was always to err on the side of caution.

“He became a familiar and popular figure among farmers and members of the society throughout Wales.”

Originally from Barry, he was appointed manager of the Midland Bank’s Builth Wells branch in 1965, and soon after took over responsibility for the society’s financial affairs.

He was one of the surviving members of the crew of a Lancaster bomber of 218 Gold Coast Squadron who together flew on more than 30 missions over Germany during the 1939-45 war.

Then a teenager, he was the aircraft’s rear gunner and completed nearly 180 hours of combat flying striking military targets on mainly daylight raids.

In recent years the aircrew re-united as the only surviving war-time crew of Bomber Command still living.

They became known as the Magnificent Seven.

In July 2005 he presented a painting to the society of a Lancaster from the squadron under attack by enemy fighters during a bombing raid on a railway complex in the Ruhr in December 1944.

It hangs in the President’s Pavilion on the showground.

In 1994 he was presented the RWAS Gold Medal, the society’s highest honour, and in 2004, the society’s centenary year, he was made an honorary life vice president of the society.

A member of the Royal Welsh board of management and the society’s Council, Mr Moseley is survived by his wife, Ellen, and Ian and Jill, his children.

My Avatar is the memorial to the 22 Commonwealth Coastwatchers at the Temakin Cemetery on Betio (Tarawa Atoll) who were beheaded by the Japanese on 15th October 1942. http://www.dva.gov.au/media/publicat...mem_beito.html

"You were given the choice between war and dishonor.
You chose dishonor and you will have war."

(Winston Churchill made this prophetic pronouncement in a House of Commons speech in 1938, just after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler. Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)
