Rock concert at former Nazi death camp sparks row

http://www.euronews.net/index.php?pa...e=451792&lng=1

Quote:
The site of a former Nazi concentration camp in Serbia will play host to a rock concert this weekend. The prospect of pulsating dance music in a place where some 48,000 Jews, Serbs and gypsies were slaughtered has sparked outrage.

But a private entrepreneur now owns part of what was the Staro Sajmiste death camp near central Belgrade and it is being used for exhibitions and cultural events.

A spokesman for the owner said the authorities issued no specific instructions forbidding the gig by British band "Kosheen".

However, the mayor of Belgrade has described the concert as "uncivilised" and Serbia's small Jewish community is in shock.

The site is less well-known than some other World War Two extermination camps.

But Aleksandar Mosic, a Jewish chairman of its memorial centre, says Staro Sajmiste's historical importance is as significant as that of Dachau and Sachsenhausen.

For many, a Holocaust museum would be a fitting tribute to those who perished at the site. Instead visitors this weekend can expect to be greeted by loud rock rhythms.

How distasteful! It's ghoulish and inappropriate. Almost literally (?) dancing on their graves.

This is absolutely disgusting! The concert should be cancelled and the site left as a memorial to dead!

"You were given the choice between war and dishonor.
You chose dishonor and you will have war."

(Winston Churchill made this prophetic pronouncement in a House of Commons speech in 1938, just after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler. Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)
