It is sad, and in some cases, as you say, volunteers do ensure that they are cleaned. But in this case, it seems that H&S concerns man that they can't just prop up a ladder because of the soft lawn. And I would accept that climbing onto the actual memorila may damage it. Stuck in a catch-22 without the money for proper equipemnt I'm afraid

Can't they just point a steam cleaner at it?

I haven't talked to the vicar for over a year (even then only because I wanted to ask permission before I took photos in church grounds) - maybe a suggestion CTNana. Next time I'm down there, I'll have another chat.

These three pics were taken at Lone Pine, Gallipoli in late Sept 05. It was an emotional experience then and even now, going through the photos, it is quite moving.

Will add a photo of my Canadian Poppy later. Haven't unpacked yet and have just walked through the door. No internet connection where i was staying, all bongo drums and smoke signals.
Take care all

Kyt, that is a very interesting memorial. Get on to EH about its condition, they may be able to help. Failing that petition the local Bishop. it is up to the Diocese to maintain these things within a churchyard.

Will try and get some shots of my local memorial on Sunday, though I have noticed that the little crosses have already started to be planted in the grass.

Of course that assumes I will remember.

Andy, here's a Gallipoli shot I pinched offline for a local history book. Gallipoli poppies.jpg

Nana, the reason they cant just point a steam cleaner is that it would literally destroy the stone work and damage the bronze. its a specialist clean only unfortunately..
