LAE WAR CEMETERY was commenced in 1944 by the Australian Army Graves Service and handed over to the Commission in 1947. It contains the graves of men who lost their lives during the New Guinea campaign whose graves were brought here from the temporary military cemeteries in areas where the fighting took place. The Indian casualties were soldiers of the army of undivided India who had been taken prisoner during the fighting in Malaya and Hong Kong. You're Top Poster: #11  | Hi Annie, Thank you so much for this. I was unaware of its existance and a number of people central to my current research are buried at Lae. When I was flying in PNG in the 1990s, I landed at Lae and had a very brief stay. I hitched a ride in search of the cemetery and ended up rather deep in country. It turns out I had been taken to one of the native cemeteries. As such, I ran out of time and never made it there. I was kindly sent a photo of one of the headstones some years back. You're Top Poster: #3 | Thanks for posting the link Annie. I have been watching the progress and waiting for the photos to go online. We have 148 RAAF lads buried at Lae Cemetery with 144 others with no known grave on the Lae memorial. I have been to Lae/Rabaul many times however it was before I started my project so I now have to depend on others to supply me with these photos.
