Andy I was married in 2005 too, in Cyprus (May)
My dad keeps on promising to send off for their army records, so I will have to remind him.

Hi Kyt

Thank you, I am going to double check dad hasn't any of the books you mentioned, maybe I could buy him a copy for Christmas.

I have also been searching Pathe News, looking out for grandad leading his men through the jungle, no luck so far.

Thanks

Have you tried contacting the IWM - they have an impressive catalogue of films and photos, some with detailed descriptions:

If you fancy doing a search of their photo database:

I did email them a while ago, and had no luck.
I will try and do a search though.

It was mentioned in a letter that grandad was on a news reel, his sister saw him while she was at the cinema.

I live near the IWM. I can see it now lol

I'm so jealous. I used to live in Balham (200 yards from the station) before moving to Bristol, and used to pop in to the IWM whenever I had a day off. I know Kennington quite well too because I used to visit this pokey little bookshop that shipped in books from India.

Is it the book shop on Kennington Lane?

We often pop in the IWM, my two kids love it (4 and 12)
Especially the Trench.

We use the park their a lot too, they are doing it up at the moment.

I read in last weeks NOTW that 38.000 bodies, thought to be Small Pox victims were found inches from a school play ground, in Newington, I am trying to find out where abouts.
I know there is no health risk, I am just interested, and wonder did they count the bodies? lol

Yep that's the one - Soma Books. Next to the laundry. Really nice chap runs it - really helpful, and there was minimal markups on the books. How he managed to stay in business I don't know (well maybe the small fortune I spent helped). Saved my bacon trying to get hold of obscure books for my research.

That smallpox story sounds interesting - and yes, how long does it take count 38000 bodies?

What sort of books does he sell?

Did you ever use the secondhand bookshop in the Elephant & Castle shopping centre?

I have just started Birdsong.

38.000 is a lot of bodies to bury!!!

All sorts from and about India. The history and religious sections were the ones I was inetrested in, and he used to import Oxford Uni (India) reprints which were the fraction of the price of the European prints - the quality was usually much poorer but readable.

I know the one you mean in E&C - is it still there? It used to have a really good poetry section, and it felt right for a 2nd hand shop. I'd heard the whole centre was being refurbished - about time too, as it always looked half-finished. I used to quite like the stalls outside.

Love Birdsong - shame his other books are of the same quality (or that could just a personal bias).

Yes book shop still there, I often sell him my books I have finished with, usually true crime.

They are knocking it down next year (I think) And the dreaded sunbways...
My daughter has a school trip to the market Wednesday, ha ha don't ask why.

I am off to East Street later.

I have not other books by Sebastian Faulks.
I like Max Arthur and Malcolm Brown.
