26 Soldiers die at Kapooka 1945

I had not heard of this accident at Kapooka in which the soldiers were killed.

They definitely need to have this on the front page and remembered!

I agree, why were they forgotten?

"You were given the choice between war and dishonor.
You chose dishonor and you will have war."

(Winston Churchill made this prophetic pronouncement in a House of Commons speech in 1938, just after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler. Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)

Nice find John, If anyone is interested, an NAA file (control symbol: 51/1/209) shows photos of the "dugout" as well as similar ones the Army used at the time to test how the explosion may have occurred.

here's a photo of the dugout where the explosion occurred:

Good on the "Strine" for digging up this tragic event. maybe it won't be forgotten again now that it is back in the national psyche.
