A memorial service has been held to remember the 1,200 citizens of Hull who died in air raids during World War II.

The consort for the city's lord mayor laid a wreath at Northern Cemetery in Chanterlands Avenue where 327 Blitz victims were buried.

Representatives from Humberside Police, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service and St John Ambulance also attended.

Hull was one of the most heavily bombed cities outside London because of its strategic importance as a port.

It is believed that more than 90% of the city's houses were damaged.

Air raids began in Hull on 19 June 1940 until 1945 and the city spent more than 1,000 hours under alert.
