Train Bombing

Just been browsing through a File regarding a Train being bombed whilst passing over the Bridge at Ponte Ortona on 28th January 1944.

The waggons were loaded with all the P.O.W. from PG 54. Figures given vary from 800 to 1200.

In the following November the fatalities are given as 331, but with many men taking the opportunity to escape during the attack the figure was not a final one.
From the lists of names a majority of those lost appear to be South African Native Prisoners.
