Canadian Army Forces WW2

Canadian Army Forces WW2

The Second World War
The Second World War was an international conflict which took place between 1 Sep 1939 and 2 Sep 1945. The war was the costliest conflict in human history and directly involved the majority of nations on the planet. The war brought about dramatic technological and sociological changes to the world, including Canada. In total, it is estimated that 62,000,000 people died as a result of the Second World War.
Designation

The term used by official histories of the war in Canada is "Second World War", though use of the term "World War II" is also widely accepted. The latter term is used by American publishers and historians.
While speculative works of fiction and non-fiction used the term Second World War in the 1930s, the first official use of the term was in Sep 1939 and the opening of hostilities between Germany, France and the United Kingdom. For example, the 3 Sep 1939 issue of the Calgary Herald used the term on the front page.
Candian Army Participation

The Canadian Army participated directly in several major battles/campaigns, chiefly:
  • The War Against Japan 1941-1945
  • Hong Kong 1941
  • Aleutians Campaign 1943
  • Dieppe 1942
  • Italian Campaign 1943-1945
  • Battle of Sicily
  • Southern Italy
  • Moro River Campaign
  • Cassino
  • Liri Valley
  • Advance to Florence
  • Gothic Line
  • Rimini Line
  • Liri Valley
  • North-West Europe 1944-1945
  • Battle of Normandy
  • Channel Ports
  • Battle of the Scheldt
  • Nijmegen Salient
  • Battle of the Rhineland
  • Final Phase

"You were given the choice between war and dishonor.
You chose dishonor and you will have war."

(Winston Churchill made this prophetic pronouncement in a House of Commons speech in 1938, just after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler. Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)

Canadian Army participation in War.

From: http://www.canadiansoldiers.com/history/wars/wars.htm

Wars
War in the sense of the 20th Century, and in relation to the Canadian Army, describes a state of armed conflict in which weapons and lethal force are used to attempt to resolve the conflict.
Canada was an active direct participant in several wars in the 20th Century:
  • Boer War 1899-1902
  • First World War 1914-1918
  • Second World War 1939-1945
  • Korean War 1950-1953
  • Gulf War 1991
The termination dates of the wars did not end military participation; for example, Canadian soldiers were still serving in Siberia in 1919, and occupation forces remained in Germany in 1946 and in South Korea until 1955.
Canada also participated in other conflicts, notably the fighting in the former Yugoslavia during their civil war in the 1990s; however, Canada did so ostensibly in a peacekeeping role although some soldiers did see combat (notably at Medak Pocket.)
While not strictly adhering to the definition of an armed conflict, the Cold War is also cited as an example of a war in which Canada was an active direct participant.
