Having dug around a bit more I think we can discount the Australian angle because they didn't last long as a unit.

As to why it was referred to as the 12th rather than the 18th, it may just have been an affectation because of the parent unit.

Have you tried contacting Mapleleaf? They are the ones for Canadian units:
